Genetic engineering, also known as recombinant DNA technology is the technique of altering the genes of living organism to produce a genetically modified organism (GMO) with a new genotype. The transgenic crops are of great importance in agriculture as these are helpful against insecticide resistance of insect pests as the crops like bt brinjal or bt cotton contains toxins from Bacillus thuringiensis, which are highly specific against insects without affecting predators and other beneficial insects and fortified foods like golden rice have been produced which are nutritionally superior than traditional rice. However there are some biosafety concerns and how these transgenic crops are going to affect the environment and biodiversity. The students cleared their queries’ about this modern technique and its application in agriculture from such an eminent personality and famous scientist. At the end Dean Agriculture Dr. SS Bal paid thanks to worthy speaker for his efforts of imparting fruitful knowledge to students of agriculture about the important aspects of application of genetic engineering in Agriculture.
