One Day Workshop on Career Prospects in the Field of Geography
Department of Geography, Baba Farid College, Bathinda organized an online "One Day Workshop on Career Prospects in the Field of Geography" for the graduates with Geography on 28-06-2021 through Microsoft Teams.
The event took off with an introductory note by Dr. Amandeep Kaur Gurna, Head, Department of Geography, Baba Farid College whereby she welcomed the guest and speaker of the day, Mr. Ranbir Singh, Assistant Professor in Geography, Government College, Barwala, Panchkula.
Thereafter the speaker enlightened the participants about the vast scope of Geography in various fields in India as well as abroad. To its immense popularity, almost 400 students registered for the workshop. Many participants asked their different queries and concerns. He also highlighted the availability of BFGI as one of the prominent institutions lass with updated equipments in the field.
Towards the closure, Mr. Dilshad Ali, Organizer & Associate Professor in Geography, Baba Farid College concluded the event with his vote of thanks. He also offered his assistance to the students with his all time availability for the clarity of any doubts related to the scope in the field.
Talk on World Cancer Day : Dr. Dinesh's Journey from Cancer Patient to Cancer Survivor
Department of Geography, Baba Farid College, Deon (Bathinda) observed World Cancer Day on 4th Feb, 2021, through Microsoft Teams. The event was titled as, "Dr. Dinesh's Journey from Cancer Patient to Cancer Survivor", wherein Dr. Dinesh shared his real life experiences when he was a cancer patient.
Mr. Dilshad Ali, the activity coordinator, introduced Dr. Dinesh to the audience and gave brief description about his condition. Dr. Dinesh shared his memories of when he first realized the symptoms of this deadly disease and how he was diagnosed infected with the disease. Then, he proceeded his talk further with various medical treatment options which he himself had undergone during his journey from a patient to survivor. The talk touched the audience. Moreover, when Dr. Dinesh overthrew prevalent myths about advanced medical treatments, many conflicting ideas between allopathic and Ayurvedic cures citing from his journey.
Primarily, the speaker during his talk, emphasized on psychological and moral support he received from BFGI institute, his colleagues and higher authorities which played a very crucial role in encouraging him to fight against the disease. So, the role of positive environment, positive vibes from surrounding, psychological support and strong will-power are the important things which help fighting any disease even as deadly as Cancer. During the talk, Ms. Navninder Kaur (Dean, Faculty of Arts), HoDs of various departments, faculty members and students were present. At last, Dr. Amandeep Kaur Gurna (HoD, Geography) extended her vote of thanks to all.
Map Making Competition - 2021 on 3rd March, 2021
Department of Geography, in association n with Skill Development Club of Baba Farid College, Deon (Bathinda) organized a 'Map Making Competition' on 3rd March, 2021. The activity was conducted in Geography Lab of Baba Farid College, Bathinda, wherein, 8 students from BA and M.Sc. Geography in total took part in this activity with great enthusiasm. Students were asked to prepare map on "Relief of Punjab". The required tools like Base map, colorful pens & pencils and QGIS software, etc. were provided to prepare the maps. All students used paper-pen method to draw the maps and represent the relief of Punjab.In addition to that, time allotted for this was one hour.(12.40 pm:1.40 pm) and students submitted the final maps before the deadline.
Students represented the Relief of Punjab through various colors by dividing the state of Punjab into various regions. In the end, their assignment was evaluated on the basis of Cartographical Skills, Information given in Map and Map Designing and result was announced by the judges. Ms. Navjot Kaur, M.Sc(Geography)SemI secured first position and Ms. Jasmeen Kaur, M.Sc(Geography) SemI, secured second position. At last, Ms. Navninder Kaur Dhillon, Dean (Faculty of Arts) congratulated the winners and motivated them to participate in more such activities. In the end Dr. Amandeep Kaur Gurna, Head of Department offered the vote of thanks to all.
Expert Talk "Sustainable Agriculture Practices: A Special Reference to Harike Wetland" on 20th November, 2020
Department of Geography, BFC organised a Webinar cum Expert Talk on "Sustainable Agriculture Practices: A Special Reference to Harike Wetland" to enrich the students with recent agricultural concerns in Punjab. The webinar was organized 20th November, 2020 from 10.00 am to 11.00 am. Dr. Gaurav Kumar, Assistant Professor, Department of Geography, Lovely Professional University, Punjab was the expert.

Department of Geography, Baba Farid College has organized an Alumni Talk on 9th November 2020. It was an initiative by the Alumni of BFC in coordination with Mr. Dilshad Ali, Associate professor, Dept of Geography which provides a platform for sharing alumni's intellectual, cultural, career and professional experiences with the present students. The event witnessed Mr. Imrozpreet Singh, Assistant Professor (Geography), Baba Shri Chand Ji Government College, Sardargarh. Bathinda. He shed light on his ideas about the conceptual understanding of the subject Geography and how had start learning Geography surroundings. He also shared his experiences with Baba Farid College of his student days during M.Sc Geography. He nurtured students by giving his own example that how he started his journey as geographer from a basic student to owner of a mapping and land surveying firm. He interacted with the students to motivate and understand the meaning of life and its purpose. He guided students to have practical knowledge in the sphere of land surveying using modern softwares and techniques. Mr. Imrozpreet Singh also gave stress on the view that it was not easy to turn their dreams into reality without guidance of his parents & mentors. The session ended with the queries from students and the sharing of experiences and views. The whole session was full of motivation, enthusiasm and interactive. |
Special Talk on "Geography in Modern World" on 6th June, 2020

Department of Geography, Baba Farid College, Bathinda has organized a special talk on "Geography in Modern World" to enrich students with recent trends of geographical research and thought. Ms. Meenakshi, Assistant Professor, PG Department of Geography, Khalsa College, Patinala was keynote speaker. The talk initiated with the formal welcome by Dr. Amandeep Kaur, Head, Department of Geography, Baba Farid College, Bathinda.
The talk proceeded with the great lecture by Ms. Meenakshi regarding nature, scope and recent trends of Geography in contemporary era. She shed light on the various branches and the importance to study geography as a subject at graduation and post graduation level. She put forth her talk

by giving stress on the importance of skill enhancement and role of geography and its latest cartographical approach in that scenario. She made students aware about the role Remote Sensing and GIS as a skill enhancement and employment oriented tools. She also appreciated the efforts of Department of Geography for running a certificate course on Fundamentals of GIS. The talk proceeded further with the query solving session. Students raised questions about career opportunities after studying Geography and strategies to qualify competitive examinations if they study Geography as a whole. Ms. Meenakshi responded the students in very efficient manner and gave tips to them for the preparation of examination by telling them importance of geography in those examinations. Dr. Deepinder Singh Brar, Dean (Faculty of Arts) also shared his views that students must explore the job opportunities by their own because it not only gives them confidence but also helps them to realize the proper way to reach their goals. In the end, Dr. Amandeep Kaur, Head of Department formally presented her vote of thanks as it was an enriching experience. |
Inter-College Geographical Quiz
Department of Geography, Baba Farid College has organized an inter-college Geographical Quiz Contest in collaboration with ‘Association of Punjab Geographers’ on 28th February, 2020. The competition was organized for the colleges under Bathinda Zone of Association of Punjab Geographers under the guidance of Dr. Amandeep Kaur (Head, Department of Geography) and coordination of Mr. Dilshad Ali and Mr Khushvir Singh Saini. Under graduation students from various colleges of Bathinda, Shri Muktrsar Sahib, Faridkot and Fazilka districts participated with zeal and enthusiasm. Teams of Government Rajindra College Bathinda, Government Brijindra College Faridkot, SBS College Kotkapura, Guru Kashi College Talwandi Sabo, Baba Shari Chand Government College Sardargarh, MR Government College Fazilka and Baba Farid College Bathinda participated for the first round in which written examination was taken. In the second round, quiz of five rounds was there to get the winner. Team of Guru Kashi College Talwandi Sabo grabbed first position and two teams of Government Rajindra College Bathinda secured second and third position respectively. The event was graced by various faculty members from different colleges, HoDs of various department of Baba Farid College, Bathinda.
During the contest, Dr. Pradeep Kaura shared his valuable views regarding Geography, its importance in our daily lives and its position among other social sciences. Dr. Deepinder Singh Brar (Dean, Faculty of Arts) had a conversation with faculty members of Geography regarding practical aspects of geography. The competition was a blooming Geographers’ meet in actual sense.
Alumni Interaction - 2020
Department of Geography, Baba Farid College has organized an Alumni Interaction on 14th February 2020. It was an initiative by the Alumni of BFC in coordination with Mr. Dilshad Ali, Associate professor, Dept of Geography which provides a platform for sharing alumni's intellectual, cultural, career and professional experiences with the present students. The event witnessed Mr. Gurlal Singh (Assistant Professor, Government Barjindra College, Faridkot) and Mr. Sukhpreet Singh (Govt Senior Secondary School, Bodiwala), Alumni (2013-15 batch of M. Sc Geography) came to lead the session at 11.00 a.m. with the students current students of M.Sc Geography and B.A.

He also shared his experiences with Baba Farid College of his student days during M.Sc Geography. He interacted with the students to motivate and understand the meaning of life and its purpose.
Mr. Sukhpreet Singh shared his whole journey which he started from BFC and how he became a government school teacher while qualifying UGC-NET/JRF. This was his interest to develop the geographical thinking among school level students so he chose this profession. He gave examples to correlate geography with other social sciences and with the real life social issues. The whole session enthralled all students and gave motivation to do something in their life.

World Cancer Day 2020
Department of Geography has organized an activity on World Cancer Day 2020. Dr. Dinesh Kumar Assistant Professor in History, Baba Farid college (a cancer survivor) shed light his struggle and motivate students to be positive. Mr. Khushvir Singh Saini express his views on types, myths and misconceptions about cancer. It was awareness talk on cancer. Department of Geography is highly thankful to Dr. Deepinder Singh Brar (Dean Faculty of Arts) for his presence and valuable thoughts which he had shared with students.
Inter College Quiz Competition
Baba Farid Geographical Association in collaboration with Association of Punjab Geographers has organized a Inter College Geographical Quiz Contest of Bathinda zone on 6/2/2018. College of Bathinda zone has participated in the competition. Associate Prof. and HOD S. Jaspal Singh Warraich has attended the event as chief guest. Dean, Arts Mrs. Ranbir Kaur Brar has graced the event with her presence as special guest.
Quiz contest has two levels, written level and finals. In written level there were 30 MCQs to be completed in 20 minutes. Top 4 teams were selected for the final level. In this level, 5 sections were there which were of Physical Geography, World Regional Geography, General Geography, India and Punjab Geography and Practical Geography .Each section consist of 3 rounds.
Govt. Rajindra College, Bathinda bagged 1st, Baba Farid College, Bathinda won 2nd and Govt. Brijindra College, Faridkot got 3rd Position in the competition. Vice Principal, BFC congratulated to the participants and winners. Associate Prof. Mr. Dilshad Ali, Event Incharge, has extended thanks to the guests and students for making their participation in the event and congratulated to the winners. Assistant Professor MS. Babita Gautam performed as quiz master while Mr. Hidayat Ullah was discipline incharge of the event. M.sc Geography students have performed various duties during the event very actively. It was very interesting and learning experience for the students.
Tree Plantation
Students of M.Sc Geography (1st and 2nd ) has planned and participated in the event. The event was inaugurated by Vice principal , BFC and DSW in BFGI campus. HOD Geography Mr. Dilshad Ali and all other staff namely Mr. Sukhpreet Singh, Ms. Babita Gautam, Mr. Rakesh Kumar and Mr. Gurvinder Singh were present on the occasion and actively participated in the tree plantation activity.
Each student and teacher has planted at least one plant on their names and took a oath to take care of the plant .plantation was held all over the campus including school ground, girls hostel area ,boys hostel lawns, Area around burger point. Students has enjoyed the event as Gardener has given some basic knowledge about the plants. Such type of exposure to students is important as it attached students with nature and they become more aware and responsible towards nature which is the need of time.
Ozone Week Celebration
Department of Geography has celebrated Ozone Day week on Sept.21, 2017. On the eve, Poster making, Slogan writing and PPT presentation competition cum discussion were organized for Geography students(UG &PG) level.
PPT Presentation Competition was held in Geography lab and Slogan writing and Poster making competition were conducted in Room no. C-8. Total 11 students has participated in the competition. Students of M.Sc 1st and 2nd Geography and B.A 1st and 2nd Year students have attended the event and also participated in the discussion on Ozone Depletion.
The event was managed and conducted by Ms. Babita Gautam and Mr. Rakesh Kumar. The event was initiated with the brief note on importance of ozone layer in our life. Slogan writing and Poster making competition was managed and conducted by Mr. Rakesh Kumar.

Ozone Week Celebration
UNO has declared Sept. 19 to Sept. 23 as ozone week. To celebrate ozone week & to spread awareness about ozone importance in our daily life, Department of Geography has organized few events. Details of these events are as follows:
Sept. 21st: Poster making ,slogan writing and power point competition were held at BFGI level at 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm in mini seminar hall, block D. Students from M.Sc Geography, M.Sc Chemistry, B.Ed, MBA, B.Com, B.Tech, B.A 3rd , BCA were present as audience and competitors.
Poster making and slogan writing competition was judged by Vice Principal and DSW, BFC.
