A Talk On Computing Differential Equations with MATLAB on the celebration of International Pi Day on 14 March 2022
On, 14 March 2022, the international pi day was celebrated by the Department of Mathematics by organizing a talk on Computing Differential Equations with MATLAB and their Graphical Interpretation by Dr. Mehar Chand through Skill Development Cell. Dr. Mehar Chand has given his talk on this topic by representing his presentation.
This one-day event was attended by approx 60 students from the various programs. At the start of the event, a students name Ms. Diksha from B.Sc. Hons-Mathematics-III introduced the concept and importance of International Pi Day. She introduced that international Pi Day is celebrated on March 14th (3/14) around the world. Pi is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant - the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter - which is approximately 3.14159. Pi Day is an annual opportunity for math enthusiasts to recite the infinite digits of Pi, talk to their friends about math, and eat pie. This day aims to showcase the fundamental role played by the mathematical sciences in the achievement of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and in reinforcing the two UNESCO priorities: Africa and Gender Equality. The Day invites us to celebrate the joy to be found in mathematics as well as the plethora of vocations it offers to girls and boys, through festive and diverse activities taking place around the world.
After that, Dr. Mehar Chand has started his valuable talk on Computing Differential Equations with MATLAB. In his speech, he told the students about the concept of MATLAB and its applications and how we can solve the differential equations in the easiest and most time-saving manner using MATLAB. With the help of MATLAB, the most difficult differential equations can be solved within a few seconds. It is highly recommendable. Matlab environment has its predefined functions and libraries which helps the programmers to use it easily. There are various complex mathematical problems that we face in our daily life; this can be executed in Matlab with a single function or code. Similarly, Matlab provides a range of toolkits that are used in many fields like aerospace engineering, communications and signal processing, etc.
At the end of the event, all the students were satisfied with the talk given by Dr. Mehar Chand, and all the students found it very interesting and knowledgeable.

International Pi Day
Pi Day is celebrated on March 14th (3/14) all over the world. Pi (Greek letter " π ") is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant - the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter - which is approximately 3.14159. Pi Day is an annual opportunity for math enthusiasts to recite the infinite digits of Pi. Pi is truly one of the most fascinating numbers in existence, and the quest for the ultimate end of it has been sought for thousands of years. This may tend to look like a fool's errand, given that it seems to extend infinitely in mathematical loops beyond, and nothing has ever been found to contest this. This is particularly remarkable when considering the following: modern techniques have been used to calculate pi out to millions of digits, and at no point has the pattern ever been found to reliably repeat itself .On this occasion Department of Mathematics, Baba Farid College Organized an activity for 12th class students. This activity held three sub activities like quiz competition, mathbola and crossword games. This event was organized under the supervision of Ms.ShifaliGoyal, HOD Department of Mathematics. In quiz competition total 7 teams participated. Teams were named as Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Theta, Delta, Sigma, Pi. Ms. Jaswinder kaur narrated the rules of quiz competition to students. There was three rounds and at the end two teams beta and gammasecured 1st position. In Mathebola game team alpha bag 6 1st position. Students enjoyed all the activities. All the students were zealous about the activities. At the end of the event winner teams were honored with prizes. Students said that they learnt a lot from this event and saw the amazing and fun side of mathematics.

Dr. Vishal Gupta (Speaker):He presented his talk on 'challenges on research writings and publications'. He discussed that how to embrace a research mindset , provide simple strategies that will improve your research habits, and discuss numerous resources which helps to search a topic for research. He explained briefly that research papers are intended to demonstrate a student's academic knowledge of a subject. A proposal is a persuasive piece meant to convince its audience of the value of a research project. Think of the proposal as the pitch and the paper as the finished product. He told that first thing is understanding your subject and formulating ideas for your paper. After that gather resource materials and begin reviewing them. Keep track of your reference materials so you can cite them and build your bibliography later. There are number of sites where excellent resources are available which helps gather information . Don't skip the organization step it is crucial for your paper's success. Without it, your paper will lack focus and you will spend more time in the revision process trying to make sense of your jumbled thoughts. Put some thought into your objective and see if you can write it in one sentence .Everything you write should support your objective. An objective will help you stay focused and prevent you from drifting off tangents. Moreover he told about 'plagiarism'; while completing plagiarism represents the most serious offense, paraphrasing is the one that is the most common. It is, thus, very important to consider and understand various types of plagiarism and how they occur. In the end various types of questions were asked by faculty and students.
